Timothy Russell, Chief of party of CSISA-BangladeshTim is managing a key USAID-financed research and development project called the Bangladesh Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA-BD). This project aims to develop the productivity of rice based farming systems by testing and disseminating new agricultural production technology and linking farmers with new marketing opportunities. The project is a partnership with two other CGIAR centers, CIMMYT and WorldFish, and as such is seen as an example of how CGIAR centers can work together to implement large agricultural development projects.

Of particular interest in this project is the emphasis on introducing mechanized planting and harvesting technology, stress-tolerant varieties and crops, short-duration rice varieties that allow cropping pattern intensification, and higher quality specialist rice varieties that cater for the needs of the growing number of Bangladesh middle income urban dwellers.
