“The GRiSS scholarship earned me the greatest exposure to facilities and modern rice research.”
Degree/Program: PhD in Agriculture, specialization in Genetics and Plant breeding
Scholarship: Global Rice Science Scholarship (GRiSS)
Field of study: Genetics and plant breeding
I am Prahalada GD and I come from one of the remote villages in India. I completed my primary and high school studies from Indian government institutions. When I was around 10 to11 years old, I used to go to my grandfather’s village during my school summer vacations and he would teach me about rice cultivation. It was quite interesting to me during those days.
I completed my master’s and bachelor’s degrees at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, India. I’ve had an immense interest in plant breeding and genetics since my undergraduate years. This interest was inspired by my teachers at the University.
While conducting my master’s research, I have generated and evaluated around 110 hybrids for one of the most destructive pest of rice, the brown planthopper (bph). I was able to find a few hybrids which are resistant to bph and was yielding almost on-par using the standard yield check. From then on, I was curious to know the gene/s responsible for resistance and their mechanisms. Currently, I am a PhD research scholar at IRRI pursuing my part of research.
Pursuing research at the International Research Institute was my greatest dream. I knew that this is rare opportunity. The GRiSS Scholarship helped me to achieve my greatest dream and now, it has come true. The scholarship also earned me the greatest exposure to facilities and modern rice research. My research was concerned with molecular breeding aspects and needs funding to be executed. This scholarship has also helped me achieve my goal of identifying a new gene for bph resistance.
Earning a prestigious scholarship can make us a more attractive job candidate. Having this scholarship, sponsored by CGIAR, is an accomplishment worth listing on my resume and can help me stand out when I search for a job. Possibly equipping me to achieve the career I want in either private or public institutions.
