IRRI's Social Sciences Division Head Samarendu MohantySam is responsible for research, training and outreach activities of the division. He manages 40 research scientists (internationally and nationally recruited staff) and 10 administrative staff. He also identifies frontier research area for the division and secure funding to kick start new programs.

As head of the Social Sciences Division (SSD), Sam recruits and retains quality staff to create a conducive environment for research and professional development, as well as conduct research on all aspects of rice including marketing, policy and trade and impact assessment.
