Can Tho City, Vietnam, December 19, 2024—In a remarkable effort to share knowledge and inspire collaboration for sustainable development in Southeast Asia, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) recently organized an event between Vietnam and Thailand, which took place in the lush Mekong River Delta from 17 to 19 December 2024.
A distinguished Thai delegation, including experts from the Thai Rice Department and key agricultural research centers, visited a pioneering pilot farm under the "Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High Quality and Low-Emission Rice" initiative. This initiative aims to revolutionize rice farming practices by 2030.
At the heart of this event was an exchange of cutting-edge farming techniques that promise to uplift the livelihoods of rice farmers. Ms. Nguyen Huu Diem Ha, a scientist at IRRI, shared insights into how this innovative model incorporates special seeds, advanced planting methods, and efficient water management to significantly enhance rice production and boost farmer incomes.
Ms. Ha highlighted the success of the OM-5451 rice variety, which has brought greater profitability and yields, empowering farmers to earn more than the prevailing market price. These modern methods have increased productivity and contributed to a healthier planet by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The delegation explored an exciting circular economy approach: farmers transform rice straw into organic fertilizer and cultivate mushrooms. Mr. Nguyen Cao Khai, director of a local cooperative, expressed his enthusiasm for the revolutionary impact of this model on farmers' lives, demonstrating the potential of modern, eco-friendly practices.
Mr. Sommai Lertna from the Thai Rice Department praised the achievements of the 1mHa model and envisioned a bright future where similar technologies benefit Thailand's rice production, fostering a spirit of collaboration and shared progress.
Additionally, the Thai delegates participated in the launch of the 1mHa program in Tien Giang Province, a vital rice-producing area in the Mekong Delta. With its comprehensive guidelines for sustainable farming and embracing new technologies, this initiative represents a beacon of hope for farmers eager to thrive.
Moreover, Mr. Thanach from IRRI Thailand expressed a commitment to adapting these innovative practices for Thailand, especially focusing on efficient and effective planting techniques that reshape the future of rice farming.
