Panneerselvam Peramaiyan

Scientist II: Cropping Systems Agronomy

About

Panneerselvam specializes in developing and evaluating advanced agronomic practices for Direct-Seeded Rice (DSR), focusing on sustainable and efficient farming solutions. His work involves creating technologies to improve nutrient-use efficiency through innovative fertilizer recommendations, soil amendments, and deep fertilizer placements. He also explores agronomic biofortification to enhance zinc concentration in rice grains and promotes climate-resilient practices that help farmers in stress-prone areas build resilience.

Panneerselvam also leads efforts to measure water productivity, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil health, yield, and economic outcomes in the transition from puddled transplanted rice to DSR. His goal is to contribute to the sustainable intensification of rice cultivation by integrating technology and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Panneerselvam has extensive experience in the industry, including as a Cropping Systems Agronomy and Soil Scientist at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT); Monitoring and Evaluation Research Specialist at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok; Senior Consultant at the National Biodiversity Authority, Government of India; and Scientist at the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai.
