Hom Nath Gartaula
About
Hom Nath Gartaula is a Senior Scientist in gender and social research under Sustainable Impact through Rice-based Systems. He is an Agricultural Anthropologist passionate about the interdisciplinary research on resources, equity, and wellbeing of farmers’ livelihoods and resilience systems. At IRRI, Hom works on food and nutrition security of rice farmers, better access for women on agricultural technologies, and solutions towards the climate crisis, gender-responsive mechanization, improved wellbeing, empowerment, and resilience of women, men, youth and other marginalized farmers in Southeast Asia and beyond.
Drawing on 25 years of experience in the field, Hom has co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles and working papers on food and nutrition security, agricultural mechanization, climate change, inclusive seed systems, and gender-transformative research methods. Before joining IRRI, he worked at CIMMYT in Mexico, taught at the University of Winnipeg, and worked as a program manager at an international corporation based in Canada. He is involved in various R&D activities across South Asia and East Africa.
Recently, he has been involved in advancing socio-technical innovation bundling (STIB) as an adaptive, inclusive, participatory, and multi-stakeholder framework for agricultural innovation systems for more sustainable, resilient, and transformative outcomes.
Education
Hom holds a PhD in Social Sciences, with a disciplinary orientation in sociology and anthropology of development and small-scale agriculture. He holds an MSc in Knowledge Management and Social Change from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He obtained a BSc in Agricultural Sciences from the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) in Nepal.
