Production and Market Relationship for Rice and Corn in the Philippines
This study involves a test of two major hypotheses regarding the economic behavior of rice and corn producers and marketing firms or agencies. Supply response functions are estimated to test whether rice and corn producers respond rationally to changes in the price of rice and/or corn relative to each other and to the prices of other crops. Relationships between farm and retail prices, and between prices at different geographic centers, are analyzed to determine precisely how changes in the price of rice and corn at one level in the market or at one location are reflected in changes in price at other levels or locations. As one step in the analysis, an attempt is also made to analyze the extent to which changes in the production of rice and corn have resulted from changes in area planted and from changes in yield.
