Production and molecular evaluation of transgenic rice plants

Gene transfer and expression of transgenes in plants have brought evolutionary changes in the understanding and improvement of basic and applied biology. The concept of totipotency was successfully used in plant regeneration of dicot and monocot plants during the last 3 decades including cereals (Vasil 1987, Beversdorf 1990, Tomes 1990). Genetic engineering in crop plants is now possible and extend from dicot species to cereals including rice (Schell 1987, Potrykus 1991, Vasil 1994, Toenniessen 1995, Datta 1997). The work will now be used in food biotechnology and molecular breeding (Willmitzer and Topfer 1992, Kishore and Somerville 1993).
