Biotechnology provides powerful new tools for rice improvement. Rapid advances in genome research and molecular technology have led to the use of DNA marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding. MAS is a tool that holds promise in raising selection efficiency and expediting the development of new varieties with higher yield potential. The benefit of this tool will be delivered to rice producers and consumers only when plant breeders use it effectively in developing countries.
