Burundi and IRRI
Rice has become an important food staple in Burundi. The East African country has seen a substantial 316% increase in production between 1984 and 2011. In the irrigated Imbo Plain, rice yields average 3.5–4 tons per hectare, close to the global average of 4.5 tons per hectare.
IRRI started its work in Burundi in 2008 when a memorandum of understanding was signed that led to the establishment of an office at the University of Burundi in Bujumbura. IRRI shared a laboratory and other facilities with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.
